Powerplant

The first 110 N3N-1 aircraft were supplied with the Wright built nine cylinder 220HP R-790-8 (Whirlwind J5-9). The remaining 70 were supplied with the NAF built seven cylinder 235HP R-760-2 (license built version of the Wright Whirlwind J6-7).

The prototype (and only) XN3N-2 was flown with a Wright built R-760-8.

Wright
All N3N-3 aircraft left the Naval Aviation Factory with the NAF built R-760-2. These are license-built versions of the Wright Whirlwind J6-7 engine. The Navy-built R-760-2 was supplied with an inertial starter.

Approved Standard category engine replacements: Lycoming R-680, P&W R-985
